About Benguerra Lodge

  • Close Panel

If you want to combine the sights of South Africa with a tropical island holiday, Benguerra Island in Mozambique is set in the clear waters of the Indian Ocean, easily accessed with daily flights from Johannesburg.

The region has a long history as a trading route -the national language is Portuguese, and the traditional boats used by fishermen bear a striking resemblance to Arab dhows. The main lodge has a large lounge and bar plus a separate dining area, both have wooden decks and thatched roofs and seating areas both indoors and out. There is a swimming pool and a spa offering a range of treatments. There is also a gift shop. On the beach, guests can enjoy a relaxing sundowner at the dhow bar.

Accommodation is in individual cabanas, casitias and villas. The cabanas and casitas are spacious, with ensuite bathrooms and private decks with plunge pools. The Villa Chibuene is perfect for honeymooners or families. It has 2 double bedrooms, each wtih ensuite bathroom with copper bathtub as well as an outdoor shower. There is a comfortable lounge and dining area and a generous wooden deck with its own swimming pool. Guests at this villa have their own personal chef who can cook and serve meals at the villa, although guests are also welcome to dine in the main lodge. The Villas at Benguerra Lodge are ideal for larger groups, with 4 bedrooms, all ensuite, a central living area with sala, lounge, bar and dining room and rooftop terrace. Each villa has a private deck and pool and direct access to the beach. Each villa has a personal chef, butler and housekeeping staff.

Activities available are mainly water based. This is a great area for diving and snorkelling. Kayaking, boat trips and sunset dhow cruises are also popular. Guests can also go horse riding, have guided island and village tours, enjoy picnics and go bird watching. Of course, guests are also welcome just to relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings, the unspoilt beaches and sea views.

Pricing guidelines for Mozambique

  • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £700 to £900 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Return flights from Joburg to Pemba (in northern Mozambique) will add on roughly £400. Mozambique combines well with South Africa, Malawi and southern Tanzania.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:

  £50 to £150
