Trekking in the Atlas Mountains

Our Unforgettable Experiences pages are written by Tribes clients. They tell us in their own words what they really felt about the things they did and places and people they met on their holidays with Tribes. Hopefully this will help you when it comes to trying to decide where to go and what to do.

We'd like to thank everyone who takes the trouble to write one of these Experience reviews for us. This is a new part of our website since February 2010, and we hope they will be added to quickly over the coming months.

  3. Whether you're into trekking or not, you should visit the mountains, if only to experience Berber hospitality. For trekkers, there are many different levels from a gentle stroll to high performance climbing. We were in the middle and throughly enjoyed the trek around Toubkal. It does get cold as you climb towards the peaks so pack fleeces, hat and gloves, even in Spring/Summer.

  3. We organised our own treks thanks to the helpful information book in our bedroom along with the service from the staff. This saved us a lot of money and allowed us to have freedom to create our own experience. Enjoyed a 4 hour and 9 hour trek over the 2 days there.

Tribes Response: Certain hotels and lodges are suitable for day treks and can provide information and local guides, while in other places and on other treks a guide is required and should be arranged in advance. Tribes can not take any responsibility for services we have not booked. Our recommendation is that you talk to us about any treks you might want to consider. You are only likely to save a lot of money if you engage a local guide who may have no qualifications, backup or safety training. We€™re glad this worked out for you on this occasion!

  3. Had lunch at the Kasbah Du Toubkal, at Imlil in the Atlas Mountains after a 30 minute steep trek. Not to be missed. The views, food and location worth the exertion. If you don't fancy the walk there are plenty of donkeys to take the strain but well worth the effort. A good place to stay if you want to get away from it all and meet like-minded people.

  3. Reaching the summit of Mount Toubkal was amazing and the highlight of our visit. We would recommend trekking in the Atlas to anyone who enjoys walking, although anyone considering climbing Toubkal should be prepared for some fairly tough conditions. It was particularly good to have our own dedicated guide rather than being part of a larger group as the walking was tailored to our pace and preferences.

  3. The Atlas Mountains were quite stunning as was the trekking. Our guide was faultless - the best trekking guide we have experienced.

  3. The local crew and guides were very helpful and we easily developed a great rapport with our small group. Our chef, Ahmed, enjoyed the challenge of creating our vegetarain cuisine! The local Berber accommodation on the trek was superb and we were treated like royalty. We found the local townspeople very friendly and welcoming.

  3. Our excellent guide, Driss, and the cook and muleteer made us feel very well looked after. The guide especially enriched the experience enormously and found exactly what suited us. We appreciated not being in a larger group - ie just the two of us - and the very gentle but steady pace of the trek, quite suitable for anyone who is reasonable fit.
