About 20 Degrees South

  • Close Panel

20 Degrees South (ex Colonial Coconut) was one of the first tourist hotels on Mauritius, established over twenty years ago. It is a small (34 rooms) boutique hotel but still luxurious and has charm and personal service. Each room is uniquely furnished and decorated with lots of homely Mauritian Colonial touches.

The hotel is located at Pointe Malartic set between Grand Baie and Pointe aux Canonniers on the North of Mauritius. It stands on a turquoise lagoon facing the islands to the north (le Coin de Mire, Ile Ronde and Ile Plate).

In a quiet residential area, 20 Degrees South is at the end of a coastal road in a peaceful location. If you fancy a bit of night life, Grand Baie is just 3km away for shops and restaurants with plenty of crafts, markets and entertainment. A lovely traditional canoe will take you free of charge to the town just 5 minutes away by boat. There are 4 trips per day at fixed hours.

Many activities are included in the price here and in addition other activities such as water skiing and diving can be paid direct. The Botanical Gardens and Sugar Museum are just 15 minutes drive away and the huge Mont Choisy beach 5 minutes. The capital of Port Louis is about 30 minutes drive.

There is a Spa with four massage rooms, one Turkish Bath and one Jacuzzi. Beauty treatments are also available and free of charge.

The 34 rooms which are sited in a coconut grove facing the sea, are divided into 4 (new) Austral Suites, 2 Suites, 9 Beachfront and 19 Charm rooms. All individually decorated and furnished. All rooms have bathrooms with both bath and shower and seperate toilets. They also all have telephones and free internet connection, mini bars and tea and coffee facilties plus all the usual comforts such as air con. They all have a terrace or balcony. Note that the charm rooms face inwards to the pool and courtyard.

The two large Austral suites are on the water with a living room area and outdoor Jacuzzi or privatge pool. For families or groups of friends there are four connecting rooms. Four rooms can be made into triples.

The hotel has a restaurant run by a talented young Mauritian chef providing plenty of fresh local food. Breakfast is English or Continental with no time limits in the morning. Lunch and dinner are a la carte. At the poolside bar you can enjoy fresh fruit juices, traditional drinks and house rum cocktails plus excellent French or South African wines.

There is light musical entertainment (piano bar or similar) at night and a dress code is required for dinner.

Pricing guidelines for Mauritius

  • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £700 to £900 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Mauritius combines well with South Africa.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:

  £50 to £100

This is a gorgeous boutique style hotel, very private with it's access through a huge door in a walll like a secret garden! The food and drink is great and the facilities are luxurious.  However, many of the rooms are not facing the sea and are very close together.  The beach is quite small and rocky. If you are looking for a good hotel with easy proximity to Grand Baie for restaurants and shops then it's ideal.
