The Capital of Mauritius, Port Louis sits on the North West coast of the island and is home to a vibrant street life, businesses and markets. It is also the base for a busy sea port.
The town was founded in 1735 by the French who stopped there in their ships passing by from the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. Many skillsmen from India were used in the crafting of the port and the town. It's name comes from King Louis XV.
For travellers all manor of services and shops can be found here. A highlight is a visit to the bustling two story under cover market. The bottom floor is where the locals haggle for their fruit, veg and medicinal supplies and the upstairs is a huge collection of craft stalls - but beware, you need to haggle hard!
The Caudan Waterfront offers a much more slow paced, western world approach to shopping with the malls and clothes shops. There is also an excellent local craft market here where prices are much more reasonable.
Le Suffren hotel is ideally located on the waterfront with a complimentary shuttle boat across the water.
