About La Hacienda

  • Close Panel

La Hacienda is a former fruit plantation set high above Old Grand Port on the slopes of Lion Mountain on the south-eastern coast of Mauritius. There are 4 individual guest houses set in the gardens, constructed in 2008 from natural local materials such as rock, wood and plant fibre. Guests are free to explore the gardens, go for walks on Lion Mountain or visit neighbouring towns and nature reserves.

La Hacienda is far away from the crowds and is set in largely unspoilt countryside filled with endemic plants and trees and populated with several species of native birds. Monkeys, hares and tortoises can also be seen here. Each guest house is self contained and enjoys a secluded setting. All have a bedroom, bathroom, living room, kitchen and wooden terraces with views down towards the sea. 3 of the houses accommodate 2 guests, wihile the larger guest house has 2 bedrooms for 4 guests. All can take an extra guest on the sofa bed. All houses are air conditioned and have mosquito protection on the windows. Amenities include a TV, radio and CD player, internet access, fridge, oven and kitchen equipment, bed linens and towels. There is maid service 6 days a week.

Breakfast is delivered to each guest house every morning, after which guests are free to stroll around the property or take walks on Lion Mountain. Mountain bikes are available for further exploration. Bird watching is a popular way to pass the time. Old Grand Port, the landing site of the first Dutch colonists is 1598, has some fine historical buildings and a museum. Old Grand Port was also the scene of Napoleon's only naval victory, which was against the British in 1810. Mahebourg is nearby, a French colonial seafront town, well worth a visit. It also has a selection of banks, supermarkets and a handicraft market. Alternatively, guests can chose to relax at La Hacienda and enjoy a swim in the pretty pool.

La Hacienda is located next to the newly-established Ferney Valley Nature Reserve and is opposite ile aux Aigrettes, bith of which can be easily visited. There is a good scuba diving centre in the bay and Blue Bay Marine Park has some great snorkelling. Other activities available nearby include kayaking, catamaran cruises, fishing, hiking and mountain climbing.

La Hacienda does not serve lunch or dinner, but guests can prepare their own meals in their oen kitchen, use the barbecue facilities or try local restaurants in Blue Bay (known for its seafood) and Mahebourg.

Pricing guidelines for Mauritius

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £700 to £900 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Mauritius combines well with South Africa.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:
