About Luwawa Forest Lodge

  • Close Panel

Luwawa Forest Lodge is located on the Viphya Plateau 10km east of the main road between Kasungu and Mzuzu.

Formerly a Forestry Department property, it has been a rest house for many years now and has a row of cottage rooms which sleep up to 4 people dormitory style in the main garden area, some more rooms in the grounds including two self contained houses which can sleep families or groups of friends. Accommodation is very basic.

There is a large lounge & dining area with a big open fire which is most welcome in the cooler winter months. The climate up here is generally quite fresh compared to the lower lying lake shores and southern highlands of Malawi.

Activities offered here include mountain biking and walking trails which stretch from the plateau down the escarpment to Lake Malawi. The lodge has large gardens leading to a dam and surrounded by forrestry plantations and areas of indigenous woodlands. The plantlife and birding in this area is excellent.

Note that the accommodation and food is very basic here and it's really more geared to school groups and outward bound type challenges, hiking and fly camping in the hills can be arranged.

Pricing guidelines for Malawi

  • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Malawi combines well with Zambia.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:
£

  £50 to £100

  £100 to £200

  £200 to £300

This place is really only ideal for school and outward bound groups.  Unless you are into biking, orienterring and adventure stuff, then don't bother.  The accommodation is a bit shabby, feels 'home made' and not the cleanest place I've ever been. They obviously don't re-stock the drinks very often as some bottles were rusty and the fizzy pop inside flat!  The birding around here is great, so if you are particularly interested in birds then it may be worth a stop off.

Julie Croucher, Africa Sales Manager - stayed here October 2010 (and previously years before).
