Kayak Africa is an adventure-safari operator specialising in sea kayak and small boat safaris on Lake Malawi, and hike-bike-kayak safaris around Southern Malawi. Kayak Africa operates two camps in stunning locations –Mumbo Island and Domwe Island. Mumbo Island is a pristine and deserted tropical island, and the undisputed jewel of the Lake Malawi National Park. Domwe Island is the largest unpopulated island in Lake Malawi, and, unlike all other Lake Malawi islands, is well populated with mammals, offering a unique combination of island retreat and (small) game viewing. A stay in either of these Kayak Africa properties, whether a relaxing, castaway experience, or something more adventurous, is truly memorable.
Mumbo Island camp has recently been upgraded, with a new dining area and bar, new ensuite toilets and showers, and a four-bed family unit. The waters around the island are clean and calm, and allow all guests - irrespective of fitness or experience - to enjoy sea kayaking, snorkeling and SCUBA diving. The island’s only mammals –Spotted-necked Otters and Cape Clawless Otters - are remarkably playful and regularly join guests for a snorkel or swim. The tiny island camp, with capacity for only fourteen guests, is built of timber, thatch and canvas and features seven tastefully furnished thatched tents with shaded decks, hammocks, hot bucket showers and ‘eco-loos’.
Domwe Island camp is self-catering and is an ideal destination for the active and adventurous. It is basic yet exclusive, and lies behind a small beach on the island’s west side. Guests make use of the kitchen facilities to prepare their own meals, with two kitchen staff to assist. Accommodation consists of three fully-furnished safari tents and two tent sites, complemented by a dining area with bar and a water sport gazebo. Mammals on Domwe Island include samango monkey, civet cat, bushpig, bushbaby, klipspringer and the yellow subspecies of chacma baboon.
