About Semonkong Lodge

  • Close Panel

A rustic, homely lodge with stone and thatch rooms in the heart of Lesotho. the lodge is on the eastern slopes of the Thaba Putsoa range.

Semonkong Lodge offers you a glimpse of life in Lesotho, set in the very heart of this mountain kingdom. In winter, chilly breezes blown off snow-capped mountains are eased by a warm fire, soft music and good company. Relax in accommodation built of stone and thatch which are rustic but have electricity and hot showers. There is a licenced bar and restaurant.

Nearby are the Maletsunyane Falls, one of the highest single drop waterfalls in Africa, which creates a haze of smoke as the water plummets 186 metres into a spectacular gorge. It is from this smoke that Semonkong –The Place of Smoke –gets its name. Enjoy a walk to the falls, swim in the pool and pass local villages for a beer and a chat.

Activities here are centered around hiking and pony trekking but also in the spring trout fishing is popular. Birdwatching is good here too with many raptors and unusual species.

The Lodge has a fully licensed bar and restaurant with a daily choice of menu which includes options for vegetarians. Should there be any special dietary requirements, they would appreciate knowing of them in advance. There is also a communal self-catering kitchen.

Overnight horse treks can be booked from here, these are quite strenuous as the rides are about 6-7 hours each day, but they are suitable for beginners. Accommodation is in Basotho villages overnight in huts with cooking equipment and utensils. Luggage is carried on pack horses.

Pricing guidelines for Lesotho

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

Trips to Lesotho are usually booked as part of a holiday to South Africa with most clients opting to self drive. Accommodation in Lesotho is fairly basic and can cost anything from £30 - £100 per person per night. International flights to South Africa will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Lesotho and South Africa also combine well with Botswana, Mauritius and Mozambique.

For a specific personal quote based on any tailor made itinerary you have in mind, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help you.
