About Shompole

  • Close Panel

Shompole is located in a 35,000 acre private conservancy, surrounded by 140,000 acres of the Shompole Group Ranch, overlooking the plains and volcanic hills of the Great Rift Valley to the south of Kenya towards the Tanzanian border and remote Lake Natron.

The main lounge and dining area has a high thatch roof, the ridge lines of which emulate Mount Shompole which it looks over to. Various split levels of seating provide different views and meals can be enjoyed here or in the privacy of your own room or by the pool under the stars. Meals served here are prepared using the finest fresh ingredients.

Each spacious tented room is designed to blend in with the natural landscape, using local materials. Each room has its own sitting areas, bathroom and cool pool, large windows offering views of the local scenery. This is an exclusive development with just 6 rooms and 2 suites. The building is designed as a cool mix of rocks and pools and water is a main feature here.

Activities offered at Shompole include guided walks in the African bush, day and night game drives, mountain biking, canoeing (seasonal) and visits to Shompole village. Massages are also available.

The skills of Maasai guides and trackers play an important part of the experience at Shompole. The area is home to a good number of animal species including lion, leopard, cheetah, hipoo, aardwolf, civet, bat-eared fox, serval, wild dog, hyena, eland, zebra, oryx and giraffe.

Guests can also meet the local Maasai people, visit a local market and villages - such activities are unscheduled and orgaised to suit the preferences of visitors.

Little Shompole consists of two luxury suites situated a few minutes walk from the main lodge with strikig views across the Great Rift Valely. They have 9' x 9' double beds, large cool pools, sun decks, lounge and spacious bathroom. They also share an exclusive lounge and dining area and a 37m horizon pool that looks across to Lake Natron. Guests at Little Shompole enjoy the privacy of a seperate team of staff, guides and room service.

Shompole House is a private villa near Shompole Lodge which is perfect for families. It has a double and a twin room but can accommodate larger groups on request.

Pricing guidelines for Kenya

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £400 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Kenya combines well with Tanzania or Uganda.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:

  £50 to £150
