About The Majlis

  • Close Panel

The Majlis has a lovely location on Manda Island facing the sand dunes of Lamu Island near Shela town and waterfront. The name Majilis is Arabic and means a place where hosts entertained their most important guests and families in comfort and style.

Majlis is influenced by a mix of Swahili, Arabic and Indian cultures, built with western comforts incorporating local traditions. This is a perfect getaway for people searching for a peaceful, relaxing holiday in a tropical climate.

This is a privately owned hotel wtih 25 gorgeous suites furnished with traditional Lamu fabrics and archiecture. There are superb seafront views over the Ras Kitau bay and Shela village, The hotel is only accessible by boat, a short 10- minute ride from Lamu Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Lamu airport is further along Manda Island and again, the transfers are taken by boat.

Facilities include two swimming pools, shaded by trees and with a pool bar serving drinks and snacks plus a gourmet restaurant offering multi cultural food. The Majlis also has an activity centre which offers a wide range of water sports plus dhow sailing and snorkeling.

Spa & Gym
The Majlis has a wellness centre offering a variety of treatments including basic and energetic massages, lasting between 30 and 50 minutes. These can be enjoyed in the massage banda on the beach or in the privacy on your own guest room. Beauty treatments including facials are also available.
There are 2 gyms - one is located near the pool bar and has several exercise machines, the other is the 'jungle gym' in the gardens. These are open to resident adults and children over the age of 6.

The Majlis Restaurant is a feat of architecture and an attraction on it's own! The roof is 14 metres high and formed from local casuarina and mangrove poles then covered in long palm leaves. The open plan veranda on the ground floor shelters the main restaurant and the upper terrace has a bar offering views over the bay. The food here features a wealth of local produce and fresh ingrediants. Plenty of seafood is purchased each day from the local fishermen on their way to market. International cuisine is served along with local dishes. The restaurant also specialises in Italian cuisine, including pasta, pizzas baked in the wooden oven and homemade ice cream. The restaurant also has the first sushi bar on the Lamu archipelago, serving sashimi and tempura as well as sushi. Breakfast is a feast of local fruits and breads with full English available too. Dinner can also be served outside under the African stars.

The villas all open on to a sandy beach with private deck viewing areas All are air conditioned and spacious with high ceilings and great views over the beach, gardens, pools and the Indian Ocean. The gardens were built incorporating indigenous plants and providing a tranquil and green backdrop to the hotel.

The Majlis has a beautiful location on a long sandy beach, an idyllic end to a dusty safari - pamper yourself with a massage or treatment followed by a cocktail at the pool bar while you watch the sunset over the Indian Ocean ...

Pricing guidelines for Kenya

  • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £400 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Kenya combines well with Tanzania or Uganda.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:
