About Peponi Hotel

  • Close Panel

The waterfront at Shela is a busy point where the inland channel meets the ocean and the fisherman bring in their catches. Peponi Hotel is a popular place for lunches and dinners as well as a local sundowner spot. The hotel has 24 rooms, which are divided into superior and standard rooms. All rooms at Peponi have sea views.

The superior rooms are differentiated by their location, size, private outside area, artwork and Swahili furnishings. No two rooms are alike. Five rooms are built right on the beach, with private verandah areas overlooking the sea, while the rest have a combination of ocean and garden views. All rooms have overhead fans, mosquito nets, showers (no baths) and personal safes.

The beach is accessed by a very short walk which leads onto many kilometres of completely deserted sandy shores flanked by tall sand dunes. There is a swimming pool in the hotel's private garden.

Food is prepared using lots of fresh local ingredients can be served in your room or in the beachside restaurant. Dhow trips and snorkelling are available as are other activities which you can book from the hotel.

This is perhaps one of the best known hotels on Lamu and very much still retains the original colonial style feel to it.

A minutes walk takes you onto the end of Shela Beach which stretches the entire length of the ocean side of Lamu Island - around 18km of sand dunes and windswept beaches.

Explore the alleyways and shops of Shela Town or take a boat taxi to Lamu Town, we recommend taking a guide with you. There are many traditional buildings, markets and sights to enjoy.

Optional activities and excursions can be booked from the hotel.

Pricing guidelines for Kenya

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £400 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Kenya combines well with Tanzania or Uganda.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:

Peponi is a bit of an institution on Lamu!  One of the oldest hotels and right on the waterfront, the bar area is a meeting place for ex-pats and visitors alike, though there is a private residents only area too!  The hotel has a colonial air about it and the beach is a short walk away - you may be pestered a bit by beach boys, so if you are looking for a more quiet option, one of the beach hotels away from town may be more suitable.  But if you like a bit of local life and want to wander round the shops and waterfront, then it's ideal.  Many boat excursions can also be taken from the harbour area outside.
