Indigenous cultures

  1. Digo

The Digo are an East African Bantu tribe who, although originating further north, now live on the southern coastal strip of Kenya and the northern coastal strip of Tanzania, and form the Mijikenda (‘nine towns’) with eight other tribes with whom they share a common oral history.

  2. Duruma

Like the Digo, the Duruma people are one of the nine Mijikenda (‘nine towns’) tribes of Kenya. They live on the Indian Ocean coast, along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

  3. Maasai

The Maasai people of East Africa – a population of around 350,000 – live in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania along the Great Rift Valley on semi-arid and arid lands.

  4. Maasai

The Maasai people of East Africa – a population of around 350,000 – live in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania along the Great Rift Valley on semi-arid and arid lands.

  5. Pokomo

The Pokomo live along the Tana River in Kenya. Since arriving here from the north after being driven south by wars in the 17th century, they have made their lives within the flood plain, developing their agriculture and fishing techniques to take the greatest advantage of the silt and water their environment provides.

  6. Samburu

The Samburu live in Kenya’s Rift Valley Province. They are related to, and share a language with the Maasai. Less nomadic than the Maasai, they have been less impacted by western culture.
