Down to Earth - The Best of East Africa

This trip incorporates the very best of Kenya and Tanzania's wildlife hot spots, combining the Masai Mara and Serengeti, and adding the Rift Valley and Ngorongoro Crater to make this trip the ultimate East African experience.

You'll stay on private farms, in a lakeside lodge, at a hotel near the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and spend seven nights under canvas in private, fully staffed campsites in the African bush, eating around camp fires and being lulled to sleep by the sounds of the wildlife around you. We'll take you on a walk on Crescent Island, past zebra, giraffes, antelope and masses of birds. And you'll visit Lake Bogoria, famed for its natural hot springs and boiling geysers.

You'll make the ultimate tea stop - in the highlands of Kericho in the heart of Kenyan tea country and then it's on to the Masai Mara, world famous for the annual migration during the months on July to October. If you're there at that time of year you'll witness the unforgettable spectacle of literally millions of wildebeest and zebra racing across the plains and rivers, with the park's predators in hot pursuit.

Once in Tanzania we take you to Lake Victoria before heading to the endless plains of the Serengeti. And finally we do a little more game viewing - this time in the iconic Ngorongro Crater - before spending a night in a charming hotel by the Conservation Area.

This is one of Tribes' Down to Earth holidays. This is a great range of more affordable, set itinerary holidays, as opposed to our tailor made trips.
The Down to Earth holidays also have their own website where you will find lots more details about each trip.

This trip is aimed at wildlife lovers and those who are happy camping in the bush. This is a camping safari (using private, fully staffed campsites), but the quality of service is high and the guiding is excellent. Children 8 yrs and over are welcome.

Best time

We avoid the rainiest month of May, but otherwise this is available each month. If you want to be in the Masai Mara when the annual wildebeest migration is here, you're best to book up for between July and October, and the best months for the Serengeti are January to June.

Pricing guidelines for Kenya

  • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £400 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Kenya combines well with Tanzania or Uganda.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:

  £50 to £150
