Help me plan my trip

On safari in Kenya

Our Unforgettable Experiences pages are written by Tribes clients. They tell us in their own words what they really felt about the things they did and places and people they met on their holidays with Tribes. Hopefully this will help you when it comes to trying to decide where to go and what to do.

We'd like to thank everyone who takes the trouble to write one of these Experience reviews for us. This is a new part of our website since February 2010, and we hope they will be added to quickly over the coming months.

  3. I have traveled to Kenya (and or Tanzania) now on 7 occasions and fall in love with east Africa more every time I return.

  3. Amboseli was a good place to start. A more arid setting than the Masai Mara it was a good place to get an introduction into game driving and for a feel of Kenya and it's people in general. The backdrop of Kilimanjaro was very impressive and there was plenty of animals to be seen. The four hour drive to the reserve was tiring after a long overnight flight (with no sleep to be had on the plane!) but it was an opportunity to see a bit of everyday Kenya and Nairobi which was interesting. The highlight was certainly exploring the Masai Mara and the opportunity to get really close to the animals here and the abundance of the animal life meant every drive provided a new experience. Here we had two all day drives which enabled us to go along way into the park and see the river crossing points and also to briefly cross into Tanzania and onto the Serengeti. The only disappointment was that we never got to complete the set and see a Rhino but it wasn't for lack of trying!

  3. While it was obviously a busy time in The Mara, we didn't mind the other cars when we saw the wildebeest crossing. Sooo much to see, so the kids were gobsmacked. Just wish we had made it to the Masai village.

  3. All loved it - even 21/2 year old enthusiatically recognising different antelopes! For younger children however strongly recommend own car seats as enabled safe naps when needed. Ater a bit of training, guides good at checking all young ones safely sitting (from standing on seats observing through roof) before driving off. Managed long bumpy drives happily because recurring things of interest to see. Plenty of bottled water provided at all times in vehicles

  3. Much, much, much better than we expected. Our first safari. Found that we could ask for different types of safari early on so went for a night drive, early morning drive, two accompanied walks on the plains. As we were in the conservancy the number of trucks was limited. We very much appreciated this having got involved in a cavalcade of 15 trucks "chasing" a leopard outside the conservancy area.

  3. The time of year is paramount to what you wish to see. Our timing at the end of July was spot on for the river crossings and massing of the Wildebeest. They said August and September is their peak season - I would hate to be there then as the number of people driving around the Mara in July was already far too many for the sustainability of this beautiful place. The park may be enormous but all the people concentrate on what is, after all, just a part of the Mara. I counted, one day, 34 vehicles watching a smaller crossing, on the side of the river we were on - just as many on the other side. Dominic also felt there were too many but agreed the Park would always want the fees.

  3. If you are after large volumes of migrating animals (wildebeest), you got it - although it comes with awe and tragedy at times. To the gentle variety of antelope, big cats, elephant and giraffe - you get it. The sheer size, expanse and beauty of the Mara is awesomely spectacular and breathtaking!

  3. We saw a spectacular Wildebeest crossing of the Mara river, thanks to our guide and driver, as well as 4 leopards, 6 cheetah and 8 lions. Some unforgettable experiences. The guide and drivers found everything we were looking for and got us into some pretty exciting positions

  3. I can't describe how good this holiday was. I had to keep pinching myself to make sure that I was not dreaming. Nights were fantastic as all you could hear was the African bush - crickets, bats, lions, hyenas adn zebra etc. At dawn the birds come to lfe - their sound is amazing. I now can't wait to go back and see more of Africa.

  3. We saw ALL the animals we could possibly want - including lions and cubs, leopard and cubs, cheetah and cubs AND a crossing of the Mara River by some wildebeest and zebra where 8 crocodiles feasted on one of the zebras!
