    About Rekero Tented Camp

    • Close Panel

Rekero Tented Camp is a luxurious, owner-hosted property priding itself on providing a warm welcome. Rekero Tented Camp’s wild riverside setting is at the heart of the Masai Mara National Reserve. Being so close to both the Mara and Talek rivers, Rekero provides guests with an ideal opportunity to view the annual migration crossings from the comfort of their armchair.

The owners, Gerard, Rainee and Jackson incorporate Rekero's motto throughout camp life. The aim is “to promote Kenyan tourism through the provision of high quality safari experience, encompassing an insight into animal behaviour, flora, fauna and local cultures.” To this end high quality game drives and walking safaris ensure visitors gain a greater understanding of the wildlife.  In addition Maasai community visits are available and are often the highlight of guests’ stay.

Guests wishing to undertake night-time game drives and more substantial walking safaris, both of which are only possible outside the national reserve, might like to consider combining a stay at Rekero Tented Camp with their new bush camp, Rekero Kidogo. As it is sited outside the National Reserve, such activities are available without a lengthy transfer to the outside of the park.

Game drives explore quiet, undeveloped areas of the Mara while their team of professional Maasai safari guides (each car being assigned a spotter and a driver) ensure that guests are provided with an in-depth and truly memorable wildlife experience. The local landscape is predominantly rolling grassland hills, interspersed with riverine forests. Expert guides ensure that the wide range of resident wildlife can be viewed in relative peace and solitude. Grazing animals such as elephants, buffalo, impala, topi and various gazelle are common in this area while it is not unheard of for leopard, cheetah, lion and rhino all to be spotted in a morning game drive.

This small and exclusive camp is set up seasonally (June - October, December - March) and caters for up to fourteen guests –each tent having an uninterrupted view of the Talek riverbank. The emphasis is to provide a personal service that meets the individual needs every guest.  Each of the seven tents is ensuite and furnished to a high standard including small and tasteful finishing touches such as flowers, glass bottles for water and magazines. Dining is generally alfresco and in dinner party style with guests exchanging experiences and sights over a glass of wine. Camp chefs produce appetising 'farmhouse' meals while special dietary requirements can be catered for. The camp is unfenced meaning that during the night elephants, hippos and even leopards are known to wander amongst the tents. It is for this reason that Maasai Askari (wardens) escort you back to your tent after darkness.

    Fair Trade / Responsible Tourism:
The former owner of Rekero Tented Camp, Ron Beaton, was integral in the setting up of The Koyiaki Guiding School, the aim being to provide local Maasai with employment opportunities within the tourism industry.  By the end of the 2006 around 50 students will have achieved the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association Bronze Award. The camp remains a committed supporter of the school, sponsoring and employing students and continuing their training following graduation.  Additionally the camp provides support for the local Ngousani Primary School, providing bursaries for more than 20 children, a rainwater collection system and $4,000 worth of books and sports equipment.  The camps plastic recycling scheme also provided fence posts to secure the school.  Camp wide the owners attempt to minimise waste by buying in bulk e.g. 18 litre bottles of water decanted into sterilised glass bottles.

    Pricing guidelines for Kenya

    • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £400 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Kenya combines well with Tanzania or Uganda.

For a specific personal quote based on any tailor made itinerary you have in mind, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help you.
