About Mara Explorer

  • Close Panel

Mara Explorer is a luxurious permanent tented camp based on the game rich banks of the Talek River in the heart of the Masai Mara National Reserve. Being so close to both the Mara and Talek rivers, the Mara Explorer provides guests with an ideal opportunity to view the annual migration crossings from the comfort of their verandah armchair. Outside of the migrations season the area offers some of the worlds most rewarding big cat sightings.

Game drives from Mara Explorer discover quiet, undeveloped areas of the Mara ensuring that guests are provided with a truly memorable wildlife experience. The local landscape is predominantly rolling grassland hills, interspersed with riverine forests. Grazing animals such as elephants, buffalo, impala, topi and various gazelle are common in this area while it is not unheard of for leopard, cheetah, lion and rhino all to be spotted on a morning game drive.

This small and exclusive camp consists of just 10 tents each of which has uninterrupted views of the Talek riverbank. The emphasis is to provide a personal service that meets the individual needs every guest. The spacious and well-appointed tents are furnished to a very high standard including an open yet secluded Victorian style bathroom suite. The luxurious tents lead out onto a private decking which provides glorious views of the river. Additionally meals can be taken here in private or alfresco near the central campfire or the open-air riverfront dining area. Personal tent attendants ensure guests receive the highest standard of personal service. The camp also benefits from an intimate lounge, camp library and access to a swimming pool so you can cool off after a hard days game viewing.

Fair Trade / Responsible Travel:
The Mara Explorer endeavours to uphold the highest standards of social and environmental responsibility - the camp being run on strict eco-principles. Together with its sister camp, they run a Community Development Fund that channels a percentage of their fees into local community initiatives, including environmental awareness training, the establishment of medical clinics, and financial support for the local Talek Primary School.

Pricing guidelines for Kenya

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £400 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Kenya combines well with Tanzania or Uganda.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:

  £50 to £150

I loved the location of this place, right on the Talek River with great views and very close to the river crossing points. It is a stunning, luxury camp and has wonderful service and staff. The rooms were beautiful and if you have the budget then this is a great place for great game viewing and comfort. Young children are not permitted at the camp.
