Loisaba Lodge

Loisaba Wilderness is on the edge of the Laikipia plateau in northern Kenya. It is a 61,000 acre private ranch and wildlife conservancy on which cattle and wildlife co-exist. Due to the varied nature of the environment (hills, plains, groves of acacia, fig and palm, and rivers), there is a good variety of wildlife at Loisaba, including elephants, giraffe, antelope, buffalo, Grevy’s zebra, kudu, dik-dik and even wild dogs and some big cats. It is also possible to see rhinos on a nearby ranch as a day trip.

There are various accommodation options at Loisaba. Whichever you choose, you can still take advantage of the many activities available here, such as walks, game drives, horse riding (for experienced riders), river rafting, fishing, visiting a local village, helicopter flights (extra), mountain biking, spa treatments, and even quad bikes.

Loisaba Lodge
Loisaba lodge used to be a hunting lodge in the 60’s but now offers stylish, comfortable accommodation in 7 en-suite rooms. All the rooms are on the edge of the escarpment with fantastic views. There is a large pool, tennis court, croquet lawn and a small health spa offering jaccuzi and various treatments and massages.

Fair Trade / Responsible Tourism
Koija Starbeds is a community-owned project bringing an income to this Laikipiak Maasai community of about 2200 people. Loisaba helped set up the camp and also markets and helps run it.
Loisaba also helps with a women’s bead and leather-making group, and a furniture workshop. In all, with about 120 local employees, about 1000 local people are directly supported by Loisaba. The Loisaba Community Trust has been set up, and has so far developed a nursery school and a mobile clinic, and helped with school scholarships.

Highlights

  1. Stunning views out over Lakipia, extending hundreds of miles – to Mount Kenya and the Mathews Range.
  2. Extensive range of activities ensure guests are never bored.
  3. A number of endemic species are common in the area along with elephent lion and leopard.
  4. Massage and spa treatments ensure guests enjoy a relaxing and serene stay.

I stayed at the Loisaba Starbeds and loved the whole experience - from the truly excellent dinner hosted by the Samburu crew, to the cozy beds and that wonderful feeling of being out in the wild. I’d recommend it to anyone.
