About Kutazama

  • Close Panel

Kutazama is a lodge in an absolutely gorgeous location in Shimba Hills National Reserve on the edge of an escarpment overlooking the Mwalugange Elephant Sanctuary.

Built to extremely high standards Kutazama is a luxury retreat which offers full use of the main house areas (lounges and dining area), and guest accommodation in private suites each with itds own verandah, decking and huge beds. Undoubtedly one of the most breathtaking features of the property is the huge double-tiered pool, set under a 30ft high cliff, which runs the entire length of the pool area. A small feature waterfall cascades from the cliff top into the upper pool and from there escapes into the lower pool. The lower pool has been designed as a recreational pool with 4 underwater seats facing the dramatic sunsets plus an infinity edge overlooking the sanctuary. There is a BBQ area for ‘alfresco' dining when the underwater pool lights create a magical night-time atmosphere.

The property extends to 31 acres, of which 7 acres are electrically fenced both for guest security and to keep the elephants out of the garden areas! The grounds are extensively landscaped and terraced with numerous meandering pathways and steps leading to viewing vantage points or shaded patio areas. All mature indigenous trees have been left in situ and a reafforestation programme, together with the planting of complimentary exotic trees, shrubs and flowers creates a tropical paradise for the guests to explore and enjoy. The grounds are alive with many species of birds and exotic butterflies and the hosts have prepared lists of what guests might expect to see throughout the year.

Game drives, walks and picnics are organised in the elephant sanctuary or in Shimba Hills and any trip and activities in the Diani area can easily be arranged for guests.

Pricing guidelines for Kenya

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £400 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Kenya combines well with Tanzania or Uganda.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:

  £50 to £150

Wow - what can I say?!  I visited this place at the request of the owners, Garry and Gill whilst on an exploratory trip in the area and they quickly became friends.  The genuine caring attitude to their staff and local community shines through and the work they have put into the lodge is unbelievable.  The views ... well, this really is one of the top three views in the world in my opinion!  Sitting in the pool, cocktail in hand watching the sunset over the vast plains in the distance and elephants walking past - how good does it get?!
