About Karen Blixen Cottages

  • Close Panel

Karen Blixen Cottages are located in Karen, a beautiful, peaceful suburb approximately 20 miles from downtown Nairobi. The cottages are located in one of the oldest formal gardens in Kenya which have huge jacaranda, candelabra, cactus, bottlebrush, and other trees. There are more than 200 types of flowers which bloom through the year and numerous bird feeders attract hundreds of varieties of birds. There is a public coffee garden, which is popular with residents and visitors alike. Local facilities in Karen include shops, banks and restaurants. There is a large restaurant serving excellent food and a sunny breakfast terrace.

The cottages are spacious and all have ensuite bathrooms and a large seating and dressing area. All have TVs, internet connection plugs and telephones. Each cottage has a private veranda where guests can relax and enjoy views of the gardens. Guests also have access to a private simming pool and a garden bar, where they can enjoy a drink.

There is an attractive swimming pool and jacuzzi tub and a small gym.

The cottages are located just half a mile from the famous Karen Blixen Museum, a popular tourist attraction, and near to Wilson domestic airport. In the grounds of the main garden is the Swedo House, the original coffee farm managers house which is now used for private functions and art exhibitions.

Pricing guidelines for Kenya

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £400 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Kenya combines well with Tanzania or Uganda.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:

  £50 to £150

I loved the setting of Karen Cottages, a very pretty, bird filled garden and the rooms are very spacious!  It can get a little noisy in the bar here, as the local ex-pats tend to use it for events and meetings, but the rooms are tucked away at the back in a residents only area, so it's not too bad!  The history of the property is fascinating and the little museum room is worth a look.
