Delta Dunes Lodge has a stunning setting with views of miles of wide, empty beaches out to sea and inland over the vast Tana estuary. There are 60km of 'private' beach, you won't find discos and beach boys pestering you here!
There are just 7 cottages, ensuring an intimate and relaxed atmosphere. They are open fronted and set on raised wooden platforms, making the most of the magnificent views. Built from driftwood, mangrove poles and with thatched roofs, the cottages blend into their environment. One of the cottages accommodates up to 4 people, making it ideal for families. Each cottage has a large ensuite bathroom, complete with hot and cold running water, flush toilet and powerful shower. The beds are swathed with mosquito nets and there are indeed mosquitos here, but there has been no malaria in this area for over 20 years.
The lodge offers wildlife viewing by boat and guided walking safaris. The area is rich in birdlife with over 400 species and in the rivers hippos and crocodiles are plentiful. Bushbuck, buffalo and lion may also be seen. Other activities include kayaking, sand yachting, waterskiing, snorkelling, fishing and walking along the deserted beaches. Alternatively guests can simply relax by the pool and enjoy views of the creek below. Meals are served in the thatched dining area and make great use the fresh local seafood. Sundowners can be enjoyed down by the creek.
The lodge has fantastic relationships with the local people who are from the remote Pokoko and Orma tribes. Their housing is developed from an Ethiopian ancestry style with 'bee hive' type huts and the local community as well as working in the lodge are actual shareholders, so a visit here really does get to grass roots communities.
Note that you need to be fairly mobile for a stay here as there are plenty of steps and climbing on and off of boats and jetties! We would recommend a minimum stay of 3 nights to enable you to immerse yourself into the environment and make the most of the range of activities and exploring the area.
The lodge can by accessed by air charter or it's just a two hour drive north from Malindi, which has a main airport.
