Azraq means blue in Arabic, and the name refers to the startling wetlands that stands out in the middle of the desert. Located in the heart of the Eastern Black Desert, Azraq Wetland Reserve is a large oasis of spring-fed marshes and pools, with seasonally flooded mudflats. Surrounded by arid desert, the Reserve is a haven for wildlife, providing sheleter for both endemic and migratory species.

Centred around the spectacular Wadi Dana, the Dana Nature Reserve is a great place for hiking, birdwatching and learning about the revitalisation of the local community. Wadi Dana is a spectacular ravine which starts at the top of The Great Rift Valley escarpment and stretches right down to the desert on the valley floor of Wadi Araba.

The castles of Kharrana, Quseir Amra and Azraq sit in the vastness of Jordan's Eastern Black Desert off the main highway from Amman to Azraq.

Shawmari Wildlife Reserve was established in 1975 with the aim of reintroducing wildlife which were once found in the region but had long since disappeared. This has been a very successful project, starting with just 11 of the rare white Arabian Oryx from various zoos, the park's herd grew to 236 individuals, enabling them to redistribute some of the herd to other parts of the Middle East.

Two main roads head south from Amman to the Red Sea port of Aqaba. The Desert Highway is a fast road cutting through a swathe of empty desert which only takes a few hours to run the length of the country. The King's Highway is a slower but far more historic and scenic road, passing through many of the main towns and sights of this archeological rich area of Jordan.

The Red Sea with its warm water and abundant marine life is a great location for relaxing, snorkeling and diving. The small town of Aqaba is Jordan's only port and has several good hotels and restaurants.

Wadi Rum is a spectacular area of desert flanked by steep cliffs. There are lots of hidden canyons or siqs within Rum, with some very remote and beautiful areas to explore.
