Down to Earth: Treasures of Jordan

Travellers from all over the world have been flocking to the ancient kingdom of Jordan for centuries and it's easy to see why. From the magic of its desert landscapes to the wild and desolate mountains, from the incredible Roman ruins in Jerash to the mystical Petra, generations of visitors have been charmed by the unique cultural experience.

This trip takes in all the classic sites of interest, showing you the wealth of treasures and timeless wonders that make up Jordan's rich heritage. A fascinating land, you'll be amazed at awe-inspiring sights and its rich natural beauty. The 'lost city' or 'forgotten city' of Petra, carved into the rock thousands of years ago is one of the main reasons people go to Jordan. The stone carved monuments of Petra are amongst Jordan's most famous national treasures, and one of the most famous archaeological highlights in the Middle East... you can't fail to be astounded by its amazing pink rock-cut architecture.

But this holiday is more than Petra. You will have time to look around the cosmoplitan capital city of Amman, visit the remarkably preserved ruins of Jerash, tour the 12th century Crusader castle at Kerak, exploring the maze of alleyways and underground dungeons, admire the intricate mosaics of Madaba, take in views across the Jordan Valley from Mt Nebo, experience desert life at Wadi Rum - sometimes called the Valley of the Moon - relax at the beach resort of Aqaba, and of course no visit to Jordan would be complete without a float in the Dead Sea.

This is one of Tribes' Down to Earth holidays. This is a great range of more affordable, set itinerary holidays, as opposed to our tailor made trips. The Down to Earth holidays also have their own website where you will find lots more details about each trip.

Is it for you?

This is for anyone into fascinating history, spectacular scenery and vibrant culture. Jordan's an easy country to travel in, with friendly people and tasty food. It is suitable for all ages and levels of fitness. Plus, it's only a short flight from the UK!

Best time

April to early June and October to November are the best times to travel in Jordan as the weather is mostly warm and sunny but not too hot, with little rain. We don’t offer packages during summer, as it gets extremely hot....nor during the winter months when it can get quite cold and wet. In 2011 we have departures in April and October.

Getting there

You need to fly in and out of Amman, Jordan’s capital. Queen Alia International Airport operates daily flights, from and to, all the major cities of Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East. Our flight inclusive price is based on flights from the UK with Royal Jordanian Airways and would leave the UK the day this itinerary begins and on the way home would arrive back in the UK the same day as this itinerary ends.

Pricing guidelines for Jordan

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £500 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers).

For a specific personal quote based on any tailor made itinerary you have in mind, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help you.
