A couple of hours drive from Udaipur, Chittorgarh was the first capital of the Mewar dynasty. Founded in the 7th century, Chittorgarh is one of the oldest cities in Rajasthan and by the 16th century had become the most important city in the region, with many fine palaces and temples. In 1567, the town was captured by the Mughal Emperor Akbar and was abandoned, forcing the Mewar dynasty to flee to Udaipur where they ruled until the end of the British Raj.
The modern city of Chittorgarh sprawls at the foot of the impressive walls of the old city, which encircle a high ridgeline. The main road passes through seven gates before reaching the crest of the ridge. As well as the ruins of the ancient palaces, you can visit the many fine temples, most of which are still active and attract Hindu worshippers. The most impressive monument is the 15th century Victory Tower which celebrates a victories battle and rises high above the ridge. You can climb the nine stories of the tower for a fine view over the ancient city, but watch out for the monkeys who patrol the temple grounds.
