Agra Fort

World Heritage Site

Also known as the Red Fort, the red sandstone walls of this magnificent fort on the banks of the Yamuna River dominates the centre of Agra. The walls and gates were built by the Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great, but most of the fine marble imperial quarters were built by Shah Jahan, builder of the Taj Mahal. Towards the end of his life, Shah Jahan was imprisoned within the fort within sight of the Taj.

Much of the fort is still occupied by the Imperial Army and not accessible to the public, but there is more than enough to see to enjoy a taste of the splendours of 16th century Indian life.
