Travelling in India

Our Unforgettable Experiences pages are written by Tribes clients. They tell us in their own words what they really felt about the things they did and places and people they met on their holidays with Tribes. Hopefully this will help you when it comes to trying to decide where to go and what to do.

We'd like to thank everyone who takes the trouble to write one of these Experience reviews for us. This is a new part of our website since February 2010, and we hope they will be added to quickly over the coming months.

  3. The driver who was with us from the Taj Chandela all the way through to Nagpur was brilliant. Always on time, thoughtful, offering us stops during the long journey and getting through an incredible traffic jam to make sure we got to the airprot on time.

  3. Our first visit to India, really opened our eyes on a wonderful country with a huge variety of experiences to be had. Highly recommend a visit to South India which is probably a bit less full on than visiting the large cities of Northern India.

  3. Using the trains meant that we saw more of the real India. Enjoyed the driving too, just glad that we weren't behind the wheel!

  3. By road it's hard work even with personal drivers and guides and the distances are long but so worth it because we got such a good view of the countryside and its people. Our plane journeys worked very well and efficiently and saved time and the train journeys are a 'must' though we are not eager to repeat the experience in the near future! Do take your own food and drink and be prepared for delays.

  3. We had 2 overnight train journeys (first class) and one 3 hour day journey (reclining seats). We found them very acceptable and less traumatic than we expected, but realize that we were cosseted. Driving in India is not like driving in the West. We had a good driver who dealt with cows and dogs lying asleep in the road and lorries coming down the wrong side of dual carriage ways. It is what is to tbe expected. I felt no more stress than being driven in England where speeds tend to be much faster.

  3. Our train Delhi to Katni was cancelled when we got to the station. The excellent staff from Travel Inn India were able to book us into another first class AC compartment leaving 2 hours later - outstanding service. Indian trains aren't for the fainthearted, but for the adventurous it's a fun experience! All the car journeys we had were fine and give a good opportunity to observe local life - our drivers also considered themselves impromptu tour guides and were happy to stop anywhere for us to take photos.

  3. It is a vibrant and exciting country. When you first travel on the roads, you are amazed that there are not lots of accidents because it seems so chaotic, but when you settle into the way of driving it just seems normal for cows to walk across the road or for a tuk tuk to be travelling on the wrong side of the road. It works, and it is an experience not to be missed. Travelling by train is also an interesting experience.

  3. Be ready for driving that shakes you to the core, poverty, dirt, open drains, smiling staring people (especially if you are tall and blond) cows everywhere, dogs with one father everywhere, handing out 10 rupee notes, spirtuality and religion in huge quantities, crumbling infrastructure, health and safety nightmares, constant horns from cars and trains, terrific food (but stick to veg), waving at children as they wave at you, and learn to be patient. Indians are.

  3. Travelling round India by road is not for the weak of stomach. Anyone who is prone to car sickness is advised not to eat before travel!

Travelling in the jeeps on safari was exhilarating.

  3. The trains were not the best standard that you would wish for, obviously the first class compartment was better than the 2nd but neither would pass for luxury in the UK. It was a bit difficult in that my husband and I had been booked into separate compartments on the 2nd class sleeper carriage which meant we were separated by two curtains, I would have thought that the booking company would have made sure the booking was made for the same compartment.

  3. Transfers by car/van were always in air conditioned comfort. Driving (preferably - being driven) is an experience not to missed - road behaviour is.......interesting.

Travel from Katni to Agra on the overnight sleeper (second class air-conditioned) was an experience I'm glad I've had and will do anything I can never to have to do again! We wanted the experience of having done it - and an experience it certainly was. Don't expect to sleep much - just go with the flow. We shared our curtained 4-bed couchette with a lovely family - got to know them well. Glad we did it - don't want to do it again.

Nice touch to book a hotel for 5/6 hours after a very early morning arrival. Much-needed.

  3. We were surprised (though on reflection we shouldn't have been) by the amount of sitting down we did on this holiday. Many hours in cars and train and then of course as many again in the jeeps of the game parks - I sort of forgot that you couldn't get out and walk about. If we were doing this again, we would try to factor in a bit more exercise time as we are used to doing lots of walking.

  3. Surprisingly, the nature of the trip wasn't as tiring as expected. We found the train and road transfers extremely interesting as we were able to see Indian rural life away from the usual tourist routes.
