Surya Samudra is set in 20 acres of lush coconut forest with wonderful views of the Arabian Sea. The atmosphere is relaxed and the pace of life slow and tranquil, making this a great place to relax after the excitement and bustle of India's towns and cities. Blending traditional Keralan culture with Western comforts, the resort offers comfortable and secluded accommodation. There are 23 cottages scattered throughout the grounds, set amidst rich vegetation ensuring privacy and located on different levels. All are constructed of wood recycled from tradtitional Keralan homes, fully restored and updated with modern amenities. The cottages are spacious and light, with large windoes that can be opened to the air and sea views. The bathrooms are open to the air and each cottage has its own eating area and veranda. Sandy paths link the cottages to the main guest areas including the inviting swimming pool, with loungers and parasols and views of the sea.
The 'Oottupura' (Octopus) restaurant specialises, not surprisingly, in seafood, which is plentiful. Local dishes are offered as well as international fare. 'Kanal' offers grilled and barbecued meals. The hotel arranges entertainment in the form of traditional Keralan dancing and martial arts displays.
Guests are free to relax within the hotel grounds, with their coconut palms, bamboo, banana palms, shrubs and flowers, or spend time by the infinity pool and the poolside bar. They can also talk walks on the forest trails or stroll to one of the two quiet beaches. For those wanting a little more activity, yoga and meditation classes can be organised. There is also a spa offering a range of treatments and massages, including Ayurvedic therapies as well as Oriental and Western treatments. The hotel also has a quiet library with internet access and wonderful views of the sea. The hotel arranges local sighseeting tours (Kovalam and Traivandrum are both nearby) and backwater cruises.
