About Spice Village

  • Close Panel

Located in the village of Kumily, two miles from the shores of Lake Periyar, Spice Village consists of 52 thatch-roofed cottages spread out amongst 8 acres of gardens.

The cottages have been designed using local traditions and materials, and the gardens are full of the aroma of spices from around the region. Spice Village has been developed in harmony with the local cultures and environment. Much of the food cooked in the restaurant is grown in the resort's organic vegetable gardens, with organic crops grown in neighbouring villages. The resort has its own composting and water treatment plants to recycle food waste and water.

There are 52 invidual, tribal style thatch roof cottages with veranda. modern pumbling, solar-powered hot water and contemporary furnishings. The standard villas include a living room and private garden, while the deluxe villas are cost huts tcuked away between fruyit rees, herb beds and trees.

The Woodhouse Bar is steeped in history and used to be the house of the famous ranger, A W Woods. Guests can enjoy the delicate blend of spices at the thatched restaurant or opt to order a meal at the 50 Mile Restaurant, where all ingredients used are obtained from within 50 miles of Spice Village.

The resort is an ideal base for visiting nearby Periyar National Park and arranges visits to nearby villages and spice plantations. Whilst staying at Spice Village guests can do the pepper vine and spices tour, participate in cookery demonstrations offered by the chef and naturalists, understand the wildlife local to Periyar at the Tiger Club or discuss the activities offered at the Tiger Reserver with the in-house naturalists.

Pricing guidelines for India

  • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £450 to £700 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). India combines well with Nepal.

For a specific personal quote based on any tailor made itinerary you have in mind, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help you.
