About Deogarh Mahal

  • Close Panel

Located about halfway between Udaipur and Jodhpur, the small town of Deogarh is a good place to break a journey through Rajasthan and explore the Aruvali Hills.

The imposing palace was built in the 17th century for the Rawats of Deogarh, one of the most important families in Rajasthan. It was completely restored from ruins by the same family, who operate Deogarh Mahal as a heritage hotel. It is a rambling structure, with a total of 50 rooms and suites scattered amongst several wings.

Each room is individually decorated with period furnishings but also feature modern fittings such as air-conditioning or air cooling and en-suite bathrooms. Suites also have tea and cofee making facilities and minibars. The rooms and suites all vary in shape and size and are located throughout the building on various floors.

The hotel has two restaurants. Chandra Mahal is a large room with ornate decor serving Indian and international dishes. Surya Mahal offers an a la carte menu. Snacks are available by the pool and private meals, such as kebabs, can be served on terraces around the building. There is also a bar and a heated swimming pool. Two treatment rooms provide Ayurvedic Massages.

Deogarh is a colourful small town with a bustling market that is well worth exploring, and Deogarh Mahal can organise jeep safaris in the surrounding countryside or visits to nearby villages. A unique feature of Deogarh Mahal is the rural rail, travelling from Deogarh to Phulad through wooded hills on a restored 1930s era train.

Pricing guidelines for India

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £450 to £700 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). India combines well with Nepal.

For a specific personal quote based on any tailor made itinerary you have in mind, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help you.

  • Example tripPrice per person
  • 1 week Golden Triangle holidayBetween £800 and £2000
  • 2 weeks in northern IndiaFrom about £1500+
  • 2 weeks in southern IndiaBetween £2000 and £3000
  • 11 day wildlife safari (including tigers)From about £1250+

No longer a family run fort, this is now a fully fledged hotel.  A new GM is in residence and he’s really doing a good job.  The staff are young and dynamic and there were plenty of them.

The food was excellent.  They have introduced a new dining area on a terrace overlooking the main courtyard.  Just a few tables and it needs to be booked but a really fun concept of trying about 15 different kebabs and 2 excellent biryanis.   The kebabs were veg and non-veg and really delicious.   It is called Kebab Corner.

The plumbing throughout has been totally re-done and hot water is now plentiful.  I had not been looking forward to going to Deogarh as I felt they had got a bit stuck last year, so I was hugely relieved and pleasantly surprised to see it running really well.  I shall definitely use it again.

It is still a grand, imposing building when you walk in.  The excursions are excellent and different and the vintage cars are fun.  The family take time out to guests when they can.  It is a vast improvement in every way from last year .  Running so much better and they are incredibly good value.  The actual property is fabulous.
