    About Chhatra Sagar

    • Close Panel

A short distance from the highway between Jodhpur and Jaipur, close to the small town of Nimaj, Chhatra Sagar enjoys a unique location in rural Rajasthan with 11 tents straddling a 100 year old dam. This idyllic spot was originally used for hunting parties by the Nimaj family who still manage the tented camp. All the tents face the lake which is teeming with birdlife.

The accommodation here is very comfortable but not luxurious; with all tents featuring traditional hand-painted designs. The tents are taken down during the monsoon season, but there is a permanent en-suite bathroom with running hot and cold water.

Chhatra Sagar is a very peaceful place to spend a few days relaxing in the countryside away from the hustle and bustle of Indian towns. You can tour the local villages and learn about the local farming and shepherd communities. It is also an ideal location for birdwatching, and birdwatching tours around the lake are organised from here.

The food at Chhatra Sagar is organically grown and cooked locally, and cooking demonstrations are available. The food is widely regarded as some of the best in Rajasthan, and the dining tent has superb views across the lake.

    Highlights and information

    • Open Panel

    Highlights

    • Unique location
    • Surrounded by wildlife
    • Very friendly and personal service
    • Great local grown and cooked meals.

    Situation

Close to the small town of Nimaj, just off the Jaipur-Jodhpur highway, about 2 hours from Jodhpur and 4-5 hours from Jaipur.

    Activities

Visits to the local farm and shepherd communities; birdwatching walks; sundowners; relaxing and enjoying the beautiful setting.

    Facilities

Restaurant and bar; all tents have private bathrooms and electricity.

    Open

    October to March.

    Best time

The lake fills up during the monsoon season when the tents are taken down, and the water levels are highest in October and November. By February and March the water levels are lower, but this brings the birdlife closer to the dam so is better for birdwatching.

    Pricing guidelines for India

    • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £450 to £700 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). India combines well with Nepal.

For a specific personal quote based on any tailor made itinerary you have in mind, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help you.
