About Hacienda Zuleta

  • Close Panel

Hacienda Zuleta dates back to the 16th century and is owned and run by sons of a former president of Ecuador, who now welcome visitors to their family home as guests. There is plenty to keep guests occupied, from hiking to village visits, horse riding to bird watching.

There are standard and deluxe rooms as well as suites. All are situated in the hacienda itself and are unique in layout. The spacious accommodation is enhanced by original antiques, family pictures and modern amenities. Rooms have garden or mountain views.

During the day guests can choose from a wide range of activities. There are various trails through the hacienda's 4,000 acres that can be explored on foot or by bike. Visits to Zuleta village are popular, to meet the local people and observe their way of life. Guests can purchase local crafts from the women's cooperative. The Condor Huasi Rehabilitation project is near the hacienda where it is possible to view these magnificent birds in close proximity. Condors can also be seen in the wild here. Horse riding is another great way to explore the area around the hacienda. Guests can also look round the farm, the organic garden and the cheese factory.

After a busy day, guests can relax in the sitting room or library, with its open fireplace. Wi-Fi is available. There is a self service bar for a well-earned drink. Food is traditional Ecuadorian using produce from the farm. Hearty breakfasts include pancakes, homemade bread, cereal, fruit and eggs.

Pricing guidelines for Ecuador

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £750 to £1000 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Ecuador combines very well with Peru, but can also be linked with Brazil.

For a specific personal quote based on any tailor made itinerary you have in mind, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help you.

  • Example tripPrice per person
  • 2 weeks highlights of Ecuador’s mainland using good standard accommodationBetween £1800 and £2750
  • 2 week trip staying in top end haciendas and lodgesFrom around £3500+
  • 10 days Andes & rainforest holidayBetween £1200 and £1600
  • 16 days Andes & Galapagos (this can be very variable due to Galapagos yacht prices)From about £3200+

Absolutely breathtaking! This hacienda is toatally unique and a wonderful achievement. It seems like you have to drive forever down a winding bumpy track to this isolated area of Imbabura, but it is well worth the effort.

This luxury hacienda, owned by the family of a former Ecuadorian president, is a very special place. Every morning after breakfast guests are taken to see the giant wall -map of the hacienda’s vast grounds to see what they want to do. There are almost limitless activities just within the hacienda’s own grounds including riding, traditional village visits in Zuleta and a vast amount of walking trails and trekking possibilities. The hacienda has its own cheese factory which guests can visit and taste the produce, a trout farm, an incredible condor project amid wonderful scenery and also a good chance to see Andean condors in the wild. These are extremely rare in Ecuador but I saw three on my visit.

It is a microcosm of the province offering everything the highlands have to offer all in Zuleta. I think a few days here would be the best possible way of experiencing this stunning area of Ecuador.
