The Achuar live in the south-eastern part of Ecuador between the Pastaza and Marañón Rivers, east of Cuenca and close to the contested border region with Peru.

The Huaorani, once known as Aucas or "warring savages", are a remote tribe of Amazonian Indians which remained untouched by western civilisation until the end of the 1950's.

The Quichua are the largest group in Ecuador, numbering over 2 million.
