Towns and cities

  1. Cuenca

The city of Cuenca is considered to be one of Ecuador's most beautiful cities. It has kept its old-world architectural charm and feeling of the colonial period. It is famed for its huge cathedral, and the smaller Indian cathedral, as well as being a centre for silver and ceramics craftsmen.

  2. Guayaquil

Guayaquil is Ecuador's largest city and busiest port with a very different character to Quito. It is a likeable and bustling city full of energy, with charming colonial buildings hidden amongst the skyscrapers and modern developments.

  3. Otavalo

Otavalo is a small town in the highlands of northern Ecuador, at an altitude of 2500m and surrounded by the huge volcanoes of Cotacachi, Imbabura (4630m) and Mojanda. The main attraction is the market.

  4. Quito

Quito is at an altitude of 2800m, and since it is only 25km south of the Equator, mostly has very pleasant days and cool nights. The city took its name from the Quitus tribe who lived here in the pre-Colombian era.
