Plaza Grande is a luxurious hotel located opposite the Presidential Palace on Quito's Central Plaza, in the historical heart of the city. The building dates back to the 16th century and was originally the home of Juan Diaz de Hidalgo, one of the Spanish conquerors and founders of the city. In the 1940's it became one of Quitos first hotels and at that time was called the Majestic. By the end of the 20th century it was a public building and fell into disrepair. As part of a major restoration of Quito's historic centre, the building has once more been made into a hotel. Millions have been spent to recreate the style and character of the old Majestic - but of course brought up to today's high standards.
