Hostal Mama Hilda is a friendly, family-run hostal in the small town of Chugchilan in the Ecuadorian Andes. A warm welcome, hearty food and comfortable accommodation make this a great base from which to explore this beautiful region.
There is a range of accommodation, most of which is en-suite. There are a number of large rooms ideal for families or groups of friends. Some rooms have their own balcony, others have private patios and hammocks.
Most food is cooked on the premises and is wholesome and hearty. Most of the desserts are made in the Italian Monastery just down the road, which also supplies freshly-made pasta. Before and after meals guests can relax in the newly restored lounge bar enjoying conversation or maybe watching sport or a DVD.
The main activity is hiking. Chugchilan is situated on the Quilotoa Loop, a well-known circuit in the Andean highlands, whose highlights include Laguna Quilotoa, an emerald crater lake. This is an excellent area for exploring on foot.
