About Araras Eco Lodge

  • Close Panel

Araras Eco Lodge is a small lodge, built in regional, rustic style, blending in with the local environment. Guests can explore the wildlfie, scenery and culture of the Pantanal on foot, on horseback, by canoe or safari vehicle. Expert bilingual guides are on hand to help guests make the most of their stay.

The 19 rooms are air conditioned, have screened windows, ceiling fans and private bathrooms with hot and cold water. There are wide verandas with comfy chairs and hammocks, ideal for relaxing after the day's activities, maybe enjoying a cool drink. There is a restaurant and a bar, where guests can chat. The lodge has a good sized swimming pool with an adjoining covered deck for meals. The food here is good home-cooked fare. The generous lunch and dinner buffets include salads, vegetables, meat and fish. The lodge produces its own milk and cheese, fresh fruit and vegetables from its organic garden and has free range chickens, sheep, pigs and water buffalo.

During the day guest are encouraged to explore the rich animal and plant life of the Pantanal. This region has some 80 species of mammals, 50 reptiles, 260 fish and almost 700 species of birds. The hyacinth macaw, with its striking vibrant colouring is often seen and is the symbol of the lodge. There are several walking and trekking trails, one of which leads to a 25 metre high observation tower, from which the vast size of the Pantanal plain can be seen. This is also a great place for close viewing of howler monkeys, as these have taken to sheltering beneath the viewing platform on the tower. Canoeing is an excellent way to explore the rivers, riverbanks and backwaters, while horse riding enables guests to enjoy the grasslands, floodplains and forests.

Araras Eco Lodge has excellent eco credentials. It is working to reforest large areas with the Acuri palm, the main food source for the haycinth macaw, as well as distributing nesting boxes and, as a result the macaw population is increasing significantly. They are also involved in a monitoring giant river otters. The lodge also works to support the local culture - music, folklore and handicrafts. Araras Eco Lodge is just 82 miles south of Cuiaba and is accessible all year round.

Pricing guidelines for Brazil

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £700 to £900 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Brazil combines with Peru, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands due to scheduled flights, so, for example, it makes a good beach stop after Peru or Ecuador.

For a specific personal quote based on any tailor made itinerary you have in mind, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help you.

  • Example tripPrice per person
  • 2 weeks nature & wildlife and/or beach trip, including such highlights such as rainforest, Pantanal and Iguassu Falls, plus Rio and the coastBetween £2500 and £4000
  • 1 week Rio and Costa Verde beach holidayBetween £1500 and £2000
  • 2½ weeks highlights of BrazilAround £3500 +

Araras Lodge is a great introduction to the Pantanal. It is easy to get to from Cuiaba and is rich in wildlife, offering a good mixture of activities. Even staying around the lodge there is an amazing number of caimans and capaybara as well as rich birdlife, and the howler monkeys were only a short walk away. My highlight was the horse riding - I'm by no means an expert rider, but my guide was patient and the horse very placid, and the experience of spotting a giant anteater while riding through the grassland was amazing. I was also very impressed by the amount of ecological projects the lodge supports - the owners obviously have a deep love for the region. This is a great option if you want to spend a few days in the Pantanal, but also combines well with one of the lodges further along the Transpantineria which offer river trips along the Cuiaba for spotting Jaguars.
