The Amazon rainforest is the largest tropical rainforest in the world, covering 2.3 million square miles in 9 countries including Brazil, Ecuador and Peru.
Brazilian Amazon
The Amazon rainforest is the largest tropical rainforest in the world, covering 2.3 million square miles, with about 60% falling within Brazil's borders. The Amazon River itself is the second longest in the world, and the largest in terms of water flow and drainage area.
Chapada Diamantina National Park
A few hours west of Salvador the lush, green Chapada Diamantina National Park contrasts sharply with the parched sertao landscape in the interior. Within this 590 square mile protected area waterfalls cascade over plateaus into grassy valleys with numerous clean swimming holes.
Chapada dos Guimaraes
Chapada dos Guimarães National Park is considered a mystical region, with terrain reminiscent of the southwestern United States, it has waterfalls and rock formations, forests and pastures. The National Park has a rocky plateau that is 2,400 feet higher than the lowland Pantanal.
Costa Verde and Ilha Grande
The Costa Verde is a beautiful stretch of coastline between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. The area is famous for its luch tropical forest, waterfalls, sandy beaches, coves and fishing villages. Ilha Grande is a forested island ringed by sandy beaches, a perfect place to relax.
Fernando de Noronha Marine National Park
Fernando de Noronha is 215 miles off the northeast coast and was declared a Marine National Park in 1988 This stunningly beautiful archipelago has 3 of the best beaches in Brazil, excellent snorkelling and world class diving in crystal clear waters rich with marine life, backed by tropical landscapes.
Iguazu Falls
Situated on the border between Brazil and Argentina, the falls are made up of 275 separate waterfalls which occupy an area 3 miles wide and 80 metres high, flanked by lush rainforest.
Pantanal
The vast Pantanal wetland covers part of Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia and is over half the size of France. More than 50% of the area is within Brazil. During the dry season (July through September) the water drains from the wetlands leaving dry grassland, small wooded islands and fish filled pools where animals and birds congregate to drink and feed.
The North East
Roughly encompassing the area from Salvador to Recife, Natal and Fortaleza, the north-eastern region of Brazil stands apart from the rest of the country.
