Rio de Janeiro and Amazon Floating Lodge

Spend three days exploring vibrant Rio de Janeiro, including a guided visit of Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) and Pao de Acucar (Sugarloaf Mountain). Then travel to the jungle city of Manaus, famous for it's opera house and the 'Meeting of the Waters' where the Solimoes and Negro Rivers meet to form the Amazon.

From Manaus it is a 1 hour flight to Tefe and a boat ride to Uakari Floating Lodge located in the Mamiraua Sustainable Development Reserve. The excursions depend on the season, with canoe excursions in the wet season through the flooded forest, and dry season excursions by canoe to explore channels, creeks and lakes, as well as forest hikes. There are also visits to local villages, evening presentations about the Reserve, and night hikes/canoe trips.

The wildlife is abundant, and it is a strange experience in the flooded season to paddle through the flooded forest and observe species such as sloths, Red howler monkeys and the endemic scarlet-faced White Uakari monkey at close range, whilst pink river dolphins, manatees and caiman swim amongst the submerged trees.

    Is it for you?

This is an easy trip, though some of the hikes in the Amazon are 2 - 3 hours in length in hot, humid temperatures.

    Best time

Rio de Janeiro is a year round destination but gets very busy between December - March and in July. The city is especially busy during Carnaval which takes place from the Friday before Shrove Tuesday to Ash Wednesday. There are two seasons at Uakari Floating Lodge - the rainy season from January to April, and the dry season from May to September. In the dry season the wildlife concentrates in and around the remaining wetlands once the floodwaters recede, whilst in the flood season (May - July) all excursions are by canoe through the flooded rainforest.

    Getting there

From the UK, flights to Rio de Janeiro cost from £700 per person.

    Pricing guidelines for Brazil

    • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £700 to £900 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Brazil combines with Peru, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands due to scheduled flights, so, for example, it makes a good beach stop after Peru or Ecuador.

For a specific personal quote based on any tailor made itinerary you have in mind, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help you.
