About Um Meia Tres

  • Close Panel

Um Meia Tres offers tradtional pousada hospitality with 21st century comforts in a fabulous setting high above the city of Rio de Janeiro. This boutique hotel has just 5 guest rooms, so a friendly, relaxed and intimate atmosphere is assured. The owners, Bill and Sue, go out of their way to make guests feel welcome and at home.

The hotel is on the highest street in the historic Santa Teresa district, known for its colonial architecture and bohemian lifestyle. There are various restaurants, shops and the tram within a 2 minutes walk, while Lapa, known for its nighlife, and the central business area are both a 5 minute bus or tram ride away. The famous beaches of Ipanema and Copacabana can be reached within 20 minutes.

It can be a bit of an uphill walk to get here from the centre of Santa Teresa, and there lots of stairs when you arrive, but you are rewarded with magnificent views of the city. The guest bedrooms make the most of the stunning setting, with large picture windows or private terrace. All are air conditioned and have ceiling fans and modern ensuite bathrooms, with white tiles and marble floors. Guests have free internet access and TV in their rooms, as well as an in-room safe.

There is a large, comfortable salon where guests can chat and watch TV, or simply enjoy the views. A sumptuous breakfast is served for guests each morning. There is 24 hour bar service and an outdoor dining area. The hotel is surrounded by gardens and backed by dramatic cliffs. The outdoor swimming pool and deck is on an upper terrace and is a great place to escape the hectic pace of the city below. Tropical trees and lush vegetation abound. The hotel offers a range of treatments which can be enjoyed by the pool or in the privacy of your own room. These include shiatsu, massage and reflexology.

This welcoming hotel is a great choice for those wanting to explore this exciting city from an atmospheric and friendly base, away from the noise and bustle of Rio.

Pricing guidelines for Brazil

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £700 to £900 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Brazil combines with Peru, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands due to scheduled flights, so, for example, it makes a good beach stop after Peru or Ecuador.

For a specific personal quote based on any tailor made itinerary you have in mind, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help you.

  • Example tripPrice per person
  • 2 weeks nature & wildlife and/or beach trip, including such highlights such as rainforest, Pantanal and Iguassu Falls, plus Rio and the coastBetween £2500 and £4000
  • 1 week Rio and Costa Verde beach holidayBetween £1500 and £2000
  • 2½ weeks highlights of BrazilAround £3500 +

It can be a bit of a hike to get up to Um Meia Tres, but the reward is a fabulous view over the city, with the Atlantic Rainforest at your back. I was pleasantly surprised to see marmosets on the terrace - not what I expected from Rio! From the outside, the hotel in unprepossessing and does not look much different from the surrounding suburban houses, but inside the rooms are light and spacious with large balconies and a swimming pool hidden away amongst the rainforest vegetation at the back. The hotel is run by a British couple with a very relaxed and informal atmosphere. You are given a key to the front door to let yourself in at any time, and if the bar is empty you can help yourself to drinks, recording them on a tab to settle up when you leave. This is a great place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, with a very different atmosphere from the big beachfront resorts that are far more common in Rio.
