About Hotel Santa Teresa

  • Close Panel

Hotel Santa Teresa is located in a former coffee plantation mansion in the cultural and historical heart of Rio de Janeiro. It has been extensively restored and refurbished and is now a hotel of great charm, style and atmosphere and the only Relais & Chateaux property in Rio. Original features such as stone arches and shuttered windows have been retained and modern Brazilian artists and designers have created work specially for the building, adding to its unique atmosphere. A range of natural materials and tropical woods have been used throughout, complimenting the historical architecture. The 4,000 square metres of lush gardens enhance the feeling of tranquility, high above the bustling city. It is no surprise that Hotel Santa Teresa was voted 'The Best Hotel is South America' by Conde Nast in 2009.

There are 44 rooms and suites, each unique in layout and decor and all benefitting from the latest technology. The rooms are air conditioned, have LCD TV, internet access, ensuite bathroom, minibar and 24 hour room service. Many rooms have balconies while others are light and airy with large windows and views of the gardens or the city. The huge panoramic loft suite has exceptional views and has been voted 'World's Best Hotel Suite' (Wallpaper Magazine).

The hotel is set in landscaped tropical gardens with palm trees and scented jasmine, frequented by parrots, toucans and monkeys, and there are secluded patios where guests can relax. The large green slate swimming pool is another attraction. Guests can enjoy poolside drinks and snacks throughout the day. The hotel has an extensive spa, with 4 massage rooms, hammams and steam sauna and offers a range of relaxation and anti-stress massages, as well as beauty treatments.

The restaurant, 'Tereze', is run by the French chef, Damien Montecer, who has worked with Gordon Ramsay and Alain Ducasse. The innovative cuisine is based on French dishes combined with Brazilian flair. The restaurant is popular with guests and locals alike and has gained a great reputation. The large picture windows offer magnificent views over the city and bay. There is a selection of over 200 wines to complement the food. The 'Bar dos Descasados' is an ideal place in which to unwind and enjoy a sundowner watching the sunset from the spacious terrace. Inside, the bar is cosy with comfy chairs and sofas, set beneath the arches of the former slave quarters of the mansion. It has been recognised as 'The Most Romantic Lounge in Rio'. A full range of drinks as well as light meals and snacks are served here.

The Santa Teresa district is the cultural and artistic heart of the city and there are many fine colonial buildings, churches, museums, art galleries and shops as well as bars and restaurants for guests to explore in the neighbourhood. The historic Santa Teresa tram passes in front of the hotel's main entrance and it is just a 15 minute ride to the city centre. Corcovado and Sugarloaf Mountain are within easy reach, as are the beaches at Ipanema and Copocabana.

Pricing guidelines for Brazil

  • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £700 to £900 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Brazil combines with Peru, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands due to scheduled flights, so, for example, it makes a good beach stop after Peru or Ecuador.

For a specific personal quote based on any tailor made itinerary you have in mind, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help you.
