About Xakanaxa Camp

  • Close Panel

Xakanaxa Camp (pronounced Ka-ka-na-ka) was one of Botswana's first-ever safari camps in the Okavango Delta, and it combines an authentic African bush camp experience with stylish and comfortable accommodation. Xakanaxa Camp is in the beautiful Moremi Game Reserve, set on the banks of the Khwai River on the Xakanaxa Lagoon, a location where big game and fantastic birdlife are guaranteed. As a privately owned camp, Xakanaxa ensures an imtimate and relaxed experience.

The elegant thatched timber main buildings and the 12 classic safari tents are raised on platforms, giving guests superb views of the lagoons and islands. Each comfortably-furnished tent has a private viewing deck to make the most of its lagoon-side position, and all tents are ensuite, with shower, handbasin and toilet. Xakanaxa Camp has a guest lounge, small library, dining room, gift shop and fire deck. New for 2011, there is an attractive swimming pool set in an elevated wooden deck surrounded by trees and shrubs, an ideal places to relax between game drives. There is also a plunge pool. There is a generator, but at night the camp is lit by candles and lanterns, creating a magical environment.

Meals at Xakanaxa Camp are usually taken in the dining room, and the chef provides excellent safari fare. Guests may, if they prefer, dine in private.

The pattern of the day is usually an early wake up call with tea or coffee and a light breakfast at 0530 - 0600 then out on a morning game drive as the animals wake up. Back to camp for 1030 a brunch is served of breakfast and lunch dishes. Guests then have a siesta time until mid afternoon when high tea is served before heading out for a late afternoon game drive and coming back to camp for around 1830 - 1900. Dinner is served between 1930 - 2000 with fireside drinks before and after.

Game Drives are in open Land Rovers. (4 Land Rovers each with the seating capacity of 10, however we only accommodate 6 / 8 guests per vehicle).

Water game viewing via mokoro. This activity is of a 30 minute duration and is done is conjunction with a powerboat exploration of the Okavango. (4 mokoro each seating two guests).Power boating available year round (3 x 8-seater boats).

Pricing guidelines for Botswana

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £700 to £1000 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Botswana combines well with Zambia and South Africa.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:

I arrived at Xakanaxa by speed boat from Kwara camp which was fantastic! On arrival I was greeted by friendly staff and taken to the very stylish communal area. The rooms are large and all have a unique identity as each has an animal theme. The camp itself is nestled between two other camps inside Moremi. I stayed in an end room and was woken by the wake-up call meant for the camp next door! Moremi itself is busy and there are lots of other tourists around. I felt that our guide wasn't very aware of client needs at times. For example, he parked up to look at a pride of lion but I couldn't see because the angle was wrong and he didn't move the car. We were also facing right into the sun, so I really struggled to take any photos. I also felt that the safari was very big game focused and didn't consider the ecosystem as a whole which as a first timer on safari wouldn't be a problem, but as a seasoned safari goer I found disappointing and frustrating.
