About Linyanti, Selinda & Kwando Reserves

  • Close Panel

A great wildlife viewing area north of the Okavango Delta where major rivers meet.  Private concessions mean that you can enjoy bush walks and night drives as well as traditional daylight game viewing by vehicle.

This region is made up of three main private concession areas - the Linyanti, Selinda and Kwando reserves.  The Kwando River forms the lifeblood of the region and acts as a 'mini Okavango' eco-system, as the river flows south from Angola across the Caprivi Strip and into Botswana, across Kalahari sand to form the Linyanti Swamps area.  It can also form a 'Delta' in wetter years, with a spread of waterways and lagoons providing feeding grounds for a large number of animal species. Two of these rivers, the Kwando and Linyanti, have permanent water so are a precious water source for the wildlife of Northern Botswana and Chobe.  Animals migrating from further south head here, particularly later in the year, for good feeding grounds.

The region is now split into three large 'concession' areas each with a small selection of exclusive camps providing excellent game viewing and guiding.

The reserves area all similar in landscape with small areas of forest and open floodplains on old river courses alongside large tracts of mopane woodlands.  Away from the water, a huge ancient fault line provides two fossil channels - the Savuti Channel and Magwegqana Spillway.

Wildlife does concentrate on the river fronts at the drier times of year but there is a good all year population of many species.  You should see Giraffe, Elephant, Lion and Spotted Hyena plus a host of antelope species.  Leopard are often seen in the riparian forest areas and mostly on night drives.  There are Cheetah here, but as with other places hard to find!  Wild Dogs usually den in this region from around June to September, this means that they actually stay in the same place for a while so July - August the guides usually can find them! Large breeding herds of elephant move in here from June and stay until December, though smaller groups are resident all year.
