Tau Pan Camp, run by Kwando, opened in March 2009. It was the first semi-permanent camp in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, the largest game reserve in the world. This area is home to a rich variety of game including lion, leopard, cheetah, jackals, a variety of antelopes and wild dogs. Bird life is also plentiful and includes the Kori Bustard, the heaviest flying bird in the world, and ostrich. It is an area of stark beauty and remoteness, pristine wilderness.
The land is mostly flat with undulating grass and bush covered sand dunes. Many river valleys are actually fossilized with salt pans. During late November to March the rains generally fall and it's during these summer rains that the Kalahari transforms as the plains and pans burst with flowers and sweet grass. Migratory species including zebra and wildebeest return to graze in their thousands. Many antelope species join them and the predators follow. Following on from May to September during the dry season the area also retains many resident species who together with the predators congregate close to any surface water and pans.
The camp is situated on a sand ridge overlooking a permanent water hole. It consists of 9 thatched en-suite rooms including a family room. The central area houses the dining room, lounge and game viewing and star gazing deck. Other facilities include a swimming pool, library and curio shop.
Activities offered include game drives in custom-built vehicles with a guide and tracker and nature walks led by bushman trackers, from the New Xade are of the Greater Kalahari Game Reserve. day trips to Deception Valley, Sunday, Piper and Passarge Pans can also be arranged. Guests can enjoy delicious bush brunches on Tau Pan.
