Self-Drive Safari in Botswana

These self-drive itineraries make Botswana both accessible and affordable for the adventurous traveller. The pre-planned routes take the stress out of travelling and make this a relaxing way to travel around and view the best that this wonderful country has to offer.

The fleet of 4x4 vehicles are fully equipped with camping and cooking equipment, with 'fridgefreezers, crockery, cutlery and kitchen utensils. They also come with duvets, pillows and blankets. Each vehicle has a NUVI navigation system and a satellite 'phone, so help is just a 'phone call away, 24 hours a day.

You will spend time in some of the best game viewing areas of Botswana, including Moremi Game Reserve, Savuti and Chobe National Park. It is also possible to extend your route to take in the Caprivi (Namibia), Makgadikgadi Pans or Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

On arrival you will have a comprehensive briefing on your vehicle, the equipment and itinerary to ensure you get the best out of your self-drive safari. You will be fully covered by medical evacuation insurance during your holiday.

Best time

The self-drive itineraries can be taken all year round. May to November is generally considered to be the best time to visit Moremi with Delta floods in July and August. The best game viewing in Savuti is from November to May, while the best time to visit Chobe is usually from June to October, with September and October being the best months for viewing elephants.

Getting there

Flights from the UK to Maun are via Johannesburg and take approximtately 13 hours. International flights from the UK cost between about £700 and £1000 depending on the season.

Itinerary

Duration: 10 days/9 nights

Starts in Maun and ends in Kasane (can be taken in the reverse direction)

Day 1  Arrive in Maun where you will be met by a local representative. You will have a comprehensive briefing including the route, vehicle and equipment, lasting between 1 ot 2 hours. You then have the opportunity to buy provisions for the next 9 days of your self-drive adventure. You spend the night camping in Maun.

Day 2  An early departure for Moremi Game Reserve. This drive will take you 4-6 hours depending on what game and birds you see en route. You spend the next 2 nights camping in Moremi.

Day 3  You have a full day to explore Moremi Game Reserve, widely considered to be one of the best and beautiful game viewing areas in Africa. 

Day 4  After breakfast pack up camp and drive to the Khwai area of Moremi Game Reserve. The drive will take around 4-5 hours depending on game veiwing on the way. You spend the next 2 nightys camping in Khwai.

Day 5  A Full day to explore Khwai in your self-drive vehicle.

Day 6  Following breakfast, pack up camp and head for the Savuto region of Chobe National Park. The drive will take between 4 and 6 hours depending on game along the way. You will spend 2 nights camping in Savuti. There is no better time to visit Savuti than now, as the Savuti Channel flowed in 2010 for the first time in 30 years!

Day 7  A Full day to explore Savuti. You can look for game in your vehicle and also have the chance to view local bushmen paintings. This is the only area in Savuti that you are allowed out of your vehicle (other than the campsite) and remember not to touch the paintings.

Day 8  After breakfast and packing camp you drive from Savuti to the Chobe River area of Chobe National park. The drive fronm Savuti to Chobe takes approximately 5-6 hours. The Chobe area is renowned for its spectacualr herds of elephants along the river. You spend your last 2 nights camping in Ihaha Campsite.

Day 9  Enjoy a full day's game driving in Chobe. 

Day 10  Pack up camp for the last time and head to Kasane town to meet the representative and drop off your vehicle.

There are 2 additonal 5-day extensions which continue either through the Caprivi (Namibia) or through Botswana via Kubu island and the Makgadikgadi Pans, both ending in Maun.

If you choose to take the 10-day route in reverse, staring in Kasane and ending in Maun, there are 2 additional 5-day extensions which continue either via the Central Kalahari Game Reserve or the Makgadikgadi Pans, both ending in Maun.

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £700 to £1000 depending on the season and route (unless the airlines have special offers). Botswana combines well with Zambia and South Africa.
