Makgadikgadi & Okavango

Experience two extremes of Botswana'’s environment, from the harsh, dry desert and salt pans of Makgadikgadi, to the watery world of the Okavango Delta. Kwando private concession offers an excellent standard of game viewing in the Okavango region offering day and night drives, walks and game viewing by boat and mokoro.

This is fascinating at any time of year, but at certain times Southern Africa's largest remaining zebra and wildebeest herds pass thought the Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans on migration searching for water.

There are a few camps dotted around the edge of the pans and the Kalahari ranging from basic tented to luxury.  This is just one example of the sort of tailor made trip we can offer for you, using Meno A Kwena on the edge of the pans as a base for the first part of the trip.  It is also possible at dry season to camp out overnight at Kubu Island or on the salt pans and take part in quad bike trips.

Trip highlights

  • Contrasting scenery and wildlife from desert to lush rivers
  • Interesting geology and flora of the pans eco-system
  • Fantastic wildlife in Moremi and boat safaris

Itinerary

  1. Day 1:
Arrive in Maun. Transfer by road (about 1.5hrs) to your tented camp on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Pans
  2. Days 2-3:
At Meno A Kwena with option for overnight sleep out on the pans (June to October only). You will have game drives in the Makgadigadi and Nxai Pan National Parks and options to venture further into the Kalahari. Enjoy the 'moonscape' scenery of the pans and the desert adapted wildlife and fossil history of this fascinating area.
  3. Days 4-6:
You will be driven back to Maun then fly to Kwando Concession in the Okavango. Three nights at Kwara Camp.  During your time here you will see plenty of wildlife in an area with few visitors so you can get close to nature by way of game drives, boat and mokoro trips on the water and bush walks.
  4. Day 7:
Fly back to Maun for your onwards arrangements.

Price

Best times to go

The Okavango Delta region is at its very best between May and September, though you can still travel here throughout the year and have decent game viewings. October to March is when the Makgadikgadi Pans flood, drawing large numbers of animals (at this time sleep outs on the pans are not possible). Best time to do this trip is between June to October. If you would like to visit the Kalahari early in the year we recommend the 'Kalahari and Okavango' trip as a good alternative December to May.
