Tau Pan Camp, run by Kwando, opened in March 2009. It has been designed to blend in with and compliment the surrounding environment of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. The largest game reserve in the world, this area is home to a rich variety of game including lion, leopard, cheetah, jackals, a variety of antelopes and wild dogs. Bird life is also plentiful and includes the Kori Bustard, the heaviest flying bird in the world, and ostrich.
The land is mostly flat with undulating grass and bush covered sand dunes. Many river valleys are actually fossilized with salt pans. During late November to March the rains generally fall and it's during these summer rains that the Kalahari transforms as the plains and pans burst with flowers and sweet grass. Migratory species including zebra and wildebeeste return to graze in their thousands. Many antelope species join them and the predators follow. Following on from May to September during the dry season the area also retains many resident species who together with the predators congregate close to any surface water and pans.
The camp is situated on a sand ridge overlooking a permanent water hole. It consists of 8 tents (7 double/twins and 1 family tent), set under thatch. The central area houses the dining room, lounge and game viewing and star gazing deck. Other facilities planned include a swimming pool, library and curio shop. Activities offered will include game drives day and night in open 4x4 vehicles with a tracker and guide, a maximum of 6 clients per vehicle and guided walks.
