The deserts of Morocco are the closest major sand dunes to Europe. And they are spectacular. To see the huge dunes of the Erg Chebbi, you need to go to Merzouga near Erfoud. This is closer to Fez than to Marrakech, but still a full day’s drive.   The true desert closest to Marrakech is at Zagora, about 9 hours drive away.  Whilst there are dunes here at nearby Tinfou, the desert around Zagora and M’Hamid is much flatter and rockier. It can however brag about having that famous sign saying 31 days to Timbuctoo!

Erfoud & Merzouga
Erfound is an oasis town and Merzouga a small village, about 55kms apart in the Sahara Desert. Both have a selection of hotels and are close to the stunning Erg Chebbi Dunes.

Zagora & M'Hamid
Zagora & M'Hamid
Zagora and M'Hamid are good bases from which to explore the Sahara Desert with its magnificent sand dunes and stunning sunrises and sunsets.
