DAY 1: ARRIVE AMMAN
When you arrive in Amman we will collect you from the airport and take you to your hotel for the night. Most flights to Amman from Europe arrive in the late evening so your exploring will begin tomorrow.
DAY 2: AJLOUN & JERASH
After breakfast we head off through pine
forest and olive groves for the city of Ajloun. Dominated
by the hilltop fortress of Qa'Lat Al Rabat, this is the only truly Islamic castle
in the country. From here we drive you 24km to Jerash, considered to be the best
preserved Graeco-Roman city outside Italy, also known as the Pompeii of the
east. Its paved colonnaded streets, theatre,
spacious public square and plazas, baths and city walls are all in remarkably good
condition. It really is like stepping back in time! After a proper look
around we head back to Amman for dinner at the hotel. Breakfast & dinner.
DAY 3: DESERT CASTLES & SHAWMARI GAME RESERVE
After breakfast we travel east to see the Desert Castles - imposing and isolated early Islamic structures which were used as as caravanserais, retreats, resthouses and bath-houses. We then move on to the Shawmari and take a drive inside the game reserve. Shawmari was established to reintroduce native wildlife such as the rare white Arabian oryx. Today there are over 80 oryx as well as 40 ostrich and 6 onagers (a type of wild ass). We return to Amman for overnight at hotel. Breakfast & lunch.
DAY 4: AMMAN TOUR & DEAD SEA
This morning we will take you on a guided tour of Jordan's
capital. In the afternoon we drive to Bethany, the site of John the Baptist's settlement where Jesus
was said to be baptised. Then continue to the Dead Sea, the lowest
point on earth 409m below sea level. The water's five to ten times saltier than normal sea water, so there's no animal life at all and it's
pretty much impossible to sink! Try a free mud treatment, the sea's mud is reputed
to have special healing powers. After sunset, head back to your hotel in Amman for
dinner. Breakfast & dinner.
DAY 5: TO PETRA VIA MADABA, MT NEBO & KERAK
We begin our journey to Petra. Madaba is best known for its mosaics, including
the famous 6th century Great Map of Palestine. Not far from Madaba is another biblical site, Mount Nebo.
Believed to be the site of Moses death, from the summit there are stunning views over the Jordan Valley and beyond into Israel. Next we head down the King's Highway to Kerak with its imposingly-sited 12th century Crusader Castle on a hilltop about 1000 meters above sea level. We explore the maze of alleyways and underground dungeons, then it's over to
the Desert Highway to reach the town of Petra in time for dinner. Breakfast & dinner.
DAY 6: PETRA
Withoutdoubt Petra is Jordan's most valuable treasure. You have a full two days to explore the 'Rose Red City'. You enter the city through the narrow Siq canyon, a deep crack in the sandstone that forms the dramatic entrance. After a kilometre long walk, round the final corner you'll catch your first glimpse of the most stunning building of all - the Treasury. You'll be blown away by the view of this perfectly proportioned Treasury tomb, carved from the rock. Continuing on, you'll come to the old theatre, cave dwellings and hundreds of elaborate rock-cut tombs with intricate carvings. Enjoy your free time to explore. Breakfast & dinner.
DAY 7: PETRA
A full free day at Petra to enjoy at your leisure. You could go back to the ruins
at your own pace to further explore Petra's rock-hewn architecture and
discover its history. (Second entry fee is not included). Or you could take our
optional visit to El Beidhe (Little Petra). Another great thing to do is
try a traditional hammam (steam bath)! And there's also the option to
see Petra by candlelight
, when it's at its most enchanting, and by which
time most of the holiday tour groups have gone! (This operates on a Monday,
Wednesday and Thursday so should be available on one of your nights at
DAY 8: WADI RUM
We leave Petra at 9am for a day well and truly off
the beaten track, with a four-wheeled safari across the desert to Wadi
Rum. Take in the desert scenery full of
incredible rock formations with inscriptions carved in prehistoric times. This is the place from where
Lawrence of Arabia attacked Aqaba during the Arab Revolt, and also where parts of the 'Lawrence'
film were shot! We end the day with a BBQ dinner. Then in true desert style, we camp in the Wadi
Rum protected area, where you can either sleep in a tent or sleep
under the stars. Night skies are truly sensational here so this promises to be
a magical experience! Full board.
DAY 9: AQABA
a camp breakfast we head to the main road by 4WD and then have a 1 hour
bus ride with more dramatic scenery to Aqaba, Jordan's holiday
resort. There's plenty to do here; if you're still feeling active you could
take a trip to Aqaba Castle, or you may simply prefer to lounge on the
beach. There's also a good choice of al fresco restaurants on offer,
so try the fresh local seafood. Breakfast.
DAY 10: AQABA
a lie-in as you have a full free day at your leisure. Soak up the sunshine
and make the most of your final day... You could take a boat trip,
windsurf, swim in the warm waters of the Red Sea, snorkel on the
coral reef or just kick back and relax on the beach, reflecting on the
fantastic adventure you've just had! Breakfast.
