A short distance from the highway between Jodhpur and Jaipur, close to the small town of Nimaj, Chhatra Sagar enjoys a unique location in rural Rajasthan with 11 tents straddling a 100 year old dam and a further 2 tents on the hillside. This idyllic spot was originally used for hunting parties by the Nimaj family who still manage the tented camp. All the tents face the lake which is teeming with birdlife.
The accommodation here is very comfortable but not luxurious; with all tents featuring traditional hand-painted designs. They are spacious and have ceiling fans and heaters for the cooler months. Each tent has a private viewing area from which you can watch the abundant birdlife. The tents on the hill are ideal for those seeking greater privacy and have magnificent 360 degree views. All tents have en-suite bathrooms with running hot and cold water.
Chhatra Sagar is a very peaceful place to spend a few days, relaxing in the countryside away from the hustle and bustle of Indian towns. You can tour the local villages and learn about farming and shepherd communities directly from the villagers. It is also an ideal location for birdwatching with over 200 species, and birdwatching walks around the lake are organised from here.
The food at Chhatra Sagar is organically grown and many of the meals are old family recipes. The food is widely regarded as some of the best home cooking in Rajasthan, and the open-sided dining tent has superb views across the lake. Dinners can also be enjoyed by the campfire beneath the stars, and cooking demonstrations are available to help you hone your culinary skills.
