Trekking in the Atlas Mountains

The Atlas Mountains are accessible from Marrakech within about an 1Mount Toubkal which you can climb if you fancy a bit of a challenge. However it is also just really great to take hikes and treks in the mountains without tackling the summits.

You can either go for day trips from a base such as Aremd or Imlil, or you can move each day and either camp or use local berber gites for accommodation.

We provide good trekking guides and, if you’re camping, all the equipment you need, though we recommend bringing your own sleeping bag.  You will also be cooked good meals of course

Whether you have a day, a week or more, the Atlas Mountains can give you exciting treks in dramatic landscape. It is also somewhere where you can bring in cultural aspects of the area too.

David & Elaine Hawkins

The peak (of course), was reaching the summit of Toubkal but the most moving experience was the kindness of Rashid our guide, and his team. The first lunch up the mountain, in the shade of a huge rock was unforgettable.

Edward Clarence

My age of 75 may have seemed a disadvantage but I was not aware of any real difficultly. Help was welcome at the summit of the passes as I was sometimes breathless. A ride on a mule soon resolved this. Apart from this I had no physical problems. Terrain was at times challenging but with the right footwear I managed very well.

Jo & Nick Bushrod

Whether you're into trekking or not, you should visit the mountains, if only to experience Berber hospitality. For trekkers, there are many different levels from a gentle stroll to high performance climbing. We were in the middle and thoroughly enjoyed the trek around Toubkal. It does get cold as you climb towards the peaks so pack fleeces, hat and gloves, even in Spring/Summer.

Waitt family

We organised our own treks thanks to the helpful information book in our bedroom along with the service from the staff. This saved us a lot of money and allowed us to have freedom to create our own experience. Enjoyed a 4 hour and 9 hour trek over the 2 days there.

Tribes Response: Certain hotels and lodges are suitable for day treks and can provide information and local guides, while in other places and on other treks a guide is required and should be arranged in advance. Tribes can not take any responsibility for services we have not booked. Our recommendation is that you talk to us about any treks you might want to consider. You are only likely to save a lot of money if you engage a local guide who may have no qualifications, backup or safety training. We're glad this worked out for you on this occasion!

B & K

Had lunch at the Kasbah Du Toubkal, at Imlil in the Atlas Mountains after a 30 minute steep trek. Not to be missed. The views, food and location worth the exertion. If you don't fancy the walk there are plenty of donkeys to take the strain but well worth the effort. A good place to stay if you want to get away from it all and meet like-minded people.

Reaching the summit of Mount Toubkal was amazing and the highlight of our visit. We would recommend trekking in the Atlas to anyone who enjoys walking, although anyone considering climbing Toubkal should be prepared for some fairly tough conditions. It was particularly good to have our own dedicated guide rather than being part of a larger group as the walking was tailored to our pace and preferences.

The Atlas Mountains were quite stunning as was the trekking. Our guide was faultless - the best trekking guide we have experienced.

The local crew and guides were very helpful and we easily developed a great rapport with our small group. Our chef, Ahmed, enjoyed the challenge of creating our vegetarain cuisine! The local Berber accommodation on the trek was superb and we were treated like royalty. We found the local townspeople very friendly and welcoming.

Mr P Gilbert, UK

Our excellent guide, Driss, and the cook and muleteer made us feel very well looked after. The guide especially enriched the experience enormously and found exactly what suited us. We appreciated not being in a larger group - ie just the two of us - and the very gentle but steady pace of the trek, quite suitable for anyone who is reasonable fit.
